Stuff.

I realize it's soooooo 5 months ago to bitch about MySpace, but I've been having issues with my friends' pages as of late. I love my friends dearly, especially the ones I communicate with on a semi-regular basis, but for the love of Christ take those running soundtracks off of your fucking pages!!! Am I the only one that listens to streaming radio, or constantly has her OWN music playing while checking email, reading the news, etc? Why must I fall victim to whatever crappy(or not-so-crappy) song that YOU find apropos to play while people check out your page? If I had it my way, all of you would be listening to Japanese noise jams 24-7, but I don't have it my way, and I really don't think y'all should either. Fuck! It's really annoying. On the bright side, a boy, rather, The Boy sent me this in the mail:

Love.

Shot in the face

Bob Burnett's latest Searching for the Democrats article on the Huffington Post is yet another long-winded screed on how the Democrats just can't own morality and make it the focal point of the party. From Searching for the Democrats - Show Me the Values:

Americans don't believe that the Bush Administration is taking the US in the right direction, but they aren't convinced that the Democratic Party would do any better. This is the fourth of six articles exploring why Dems are having such a tough time taking advantage of Bush Administration ineptitude. This focuses on the issue of values.

The words of George Lakoff came to mind after the first paragraph: When you negate a frame, you evoke the frame. Democrats have no new ideas. Democrats don't have a real grasp on values. *Yawn* He frames us as some sort of pitied group of ragtag pols who just don't get it. Barack Obama did the exact same thing on one of the Sunday talkers a few weeks ago. One would think that adding to the fray would only increase the Machiavellian hold the Republicans already have on politics.

It's emblematic of how far the Dems have fallen that they have turned off a large segment of their base.

Excluding the 59,028,109 people that voted for John Kerry, of course.

Democrats have fallen so low that even New York Times columnist, David Brooks, gives them advice. In his column of January 26th, Brooks noted, "Smart Democratic analysts are also taking another look at values issues. There has been a tendency in Democratic circles to regard values as a sideshow that Republicans use to fool the working class into voting against its self-interest. But over the past year [Democratic pollsters] noted that voters don't separate values issues from economic issues. They use values issues as stand-ins and figure the candidates they associate with traditional morality are also the ones with sensible economic policies." The Neo-Con lapdog concludes, "Middle-class Americans feel social anxiety more acutely than economic anxiety because they understand that values matter most. Democrats are beginning to understand this, too." Brooks moves in the same New York-Washington DC circles frequented by what passes for the Democratic "intelligentsia." Therefore, he may be correct stating that in this rarefied environment, where over-priced consultants monitor every move that politicians make and smother them with ill-considered advice, Democrats are just now turning to values.

Where to begin? Unwarranted advice from the unusually shiny, low-talking Brooks hardly constitutes commentary on just how low Democrats have fallen. From a guy who started his career on the factually-challenged editorial board of the Wall Street Journal, then moved on to author Bobos in Paradise, a bestseller exploring the not-so-mysterious world of REI-shopping, hybrid-driving, middle-aged blue-state Boomers, Brooks is hardly the person Democrats have ever looked to for assistance. And what is this Democratic intelligentsia Burnett is talking about, and since when has David Brooks been a part of it? The article thus far has painted the overused cliche of elite and effete Democrats that just don't get it.

Nonetheless, out here in the boonies, where we actually talk to real people, we've been concerned about values for a long time. We actually worry about things like the morality of the war in Iraq, the ethics of a government that would leave poor black folks behind in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, and the mores of an Administration that worries more about the profits of big oil companies that it does about the prospects of global warming. Maybe David Brooks should get out more, talk to Democratic loyalists rather than desiccated DC pols. Because rank-and-file Dems care a lot about values.

Seriously, someone please stick a fork in my eye, then beat me about the head, face and neck with a dead fish.
Paraphrasing Bob Dylan, “Something’s happening, but you don’t know what it is, do you Mr. [Brooks]?” The N.Y. Times conservative pundit has unwittingly wandered into the middle of a fight for the heart of the Democratic Party. A battle between tactics-based apparatchiks and values-based loyalists. Between the DC-based Dem “intelligentsia” and those of us who inhabit the real world.
Paraphrasing Bob Dylan (*double-yawn*) and unnecessarily simplifying the Democratic divide to an us vs. them mentality within the party is disingenuous. Just as the nation isn't divisible by red or blue lines, neither is a political party relegated to only intellectuals or real-world inhabitants.

Ironically, the fight for the heart of the Democratic Party will not be decided by the issue of Iraq or the Economy or the other issues vying for media attention. This fight will be about morality. What set of values will the Democrats embrace?

So now what? The party is devoid of any new ideas, we don't have a grip on morality, and we're hopelessly out of touch with the real-world. Thank God we have good people like Bob Burnett to outline our disillusionment and offer up no new ideas to remedy the problem. Until this great Democratic revolution magically appears, we'll have to deal with the good deeds being done by the following out-of-touch intellegistas: Progressive Legislative Action Network Southern Poverty Law Center The Fighting Dems The Swing State Project The Congressional Black Caucus The Center for American Progress Think Progress

Chomping at the bit

From Matt Drudge's breathless headline:

Bush called reports at about 2.30 aboard Air Force One to issue a very strong defense of port deal... MORE... He said he would veto any legislation to hold up deal and warned the United States was sending 'mixed signals' by going after a company from the Middle East when nothing was said when a British company was in charge... Lawmakers, he said, must 'step up and explain why a middle eastern company is held to a different standard.' Bush was very forceful when he delivered the statement... 'I don't view it as a political fight,' Bush said.... MORE... MORE... BUSH ISSUES VETO THREAT; VOWS TO KEEP PORT DEAL

(I'm guessing the MORE, MORE was a holla' back to time spent with Jeff Gannon, official White House manwhore.) ...but back to the United Arab Emirates. I really don't think liberal hysteria to assume this move might be a dangerous one. I yanked these funfacts from the Think Progress website:

– The UAE was one of three countries in the world to recognize the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan. – The UAE has been a key transfer point for illegal shipments of nuclear components to Iran, North Korea and Lybia. – According to the FBI, money was transferred to the 9/11 hijackers through the UAE banking system. – After 9/11, the Treasury Department reported that the UAE was not cooperating in efforts to track down Osama Bin Laden’s bank accounts.

Looking back at these last 6 years, one would be hard-pressed to come up with a positive result coming from any one of Bush's bright ideas: The Global War on Terror, No Child Left Behind, Department of Homeland Security, Social Security Privatization, Hurrican Katrina, The Valerie Plame affair, etc. Can someone please remind me again why the GOP is strong on national security? Our president is an idiot. It's really rather sad.

Politiquera? Hardly...

It's been difficult for me to dive into the foreign waters of Rio Grande Valley politics. From the time I was a kid, sitting excitedly in front of the TV to watch the State of the Union address, I've always had a keen interest in the BIG picture, and politics on a national level were the be-all, end-all for me. Now that I've grown older and formed my own version of a progressive ideology, I've come to realize that yes, the personal is political, and all politics ultimately start at the local level.
As I've started slow, I wont be up to par with the existing RGV politicos that know the game, the players, and the secret plays. The Ramon Garcia vs. JD Salinas race, for instance has boiled down to a personal choice between an old friend of the family vs. the big brother of a cowboy I used to date. Ramon is no doubt spending more on the campaign than the salary he will receive if re-elected, but JD has chosen to go negative on his first commercial. Thus far, I foresee a nasty race in which the incumbent will win, the challenger will bow out gracefully, and Hidalgo county will go back to business as usual.
How's that for half-assed defeatism?

Lurking Non-Participant...a gripe

What is it about U2 that causes otherwise rational bloggers to paste lyrics (in their entirety!) into the comments section of wildly popular, progressive blogs? Down with Bono!

Wednesday Fun'ns

Did anyone know that today was Abstinence Day on the Hill?!?!! Tony Perkins, of the Family Research Council proclaimed it...and it was so.

Representatives Ernie Istook (R-OK) and Lee Terry (R-NE) addressed more than 100 abstinence educators and teens in the racially diverse crowd. Our friend, Claude Allen, White House Domestic Policy Advisor, also encouraged the group. Following this morning's activities, the young people who were in attendance enthusiastically headed off to speak to members of Congress about supporting abstinence education.

I'm glad the crowd was racially diverse. It just goes to show that us brown folk aren't just fuckin' in the streets, leaving babies in trashcans in our wake. We too can abstain with the palest of them. Check out some of Stephen Colbert's steamy fanfic, "Shorts Weather." A preview:

"Looks like the only thing failing to spin in this zone are the rotors on our air conditioner, eh O'Reilly?" deadpans Stephen, focusing his trademark stare squarely on O'Reilly's quivering eyes. But O'Reilly can't meet his gaze - to him, the shorts are like a car accident, in all the right ways.

Sweeeeeeet. See y'all tomorrow.

Dick in the Willeford?

The Huffington Post is reporting a rumor that broke yesterday courtesy of Alex Bennett of Sirius radio.
Pamela Willeford, ambassador to Switzerland and -- yes -- Liechtenstein, was part of the hunting excursion with Cheney and Whittington. And according to Willeford's account, Cheney and the ambassador were side-by-side when the shooting of Whittington took place. The vice president's Secret Service detail had to decide what to do with Willeford by way of perhaps covering up her relationship with Cheney, and thus the delay in reporting the news. The rumor goes that Lynn Cheney isn't happy with Cheney's close relationship with Willeford.
I have a feeling this rumor-train wont go anywhere, but still, it's fun to speculate. Ew.

We Don't Know Dick

"The orange that they're wearing is not because they're concerned that the vice president may be there," joked White House press secretary Scott McClellan, following the lead of late-night television comedians. "That's why I'm wearing it." The president's brother, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, took a similar jab after slapping an orange sticker on his chest from the Florida Farm Bureau that read, "No Farmers, No Food." "I'm a little concerned that Dick Cheney is going to walk in," the governor cracked during an appearance in Tampa Monday.

Funny, funny...until someone has a heart attack.

One Stop Shopping

From Think Progress: "I’m sorry, Mr. Attorney General. I forgot you can’t answer any questions that might be relevant…” – Sen. Pat Leahy, 2/6/06 Can you feel the loooooooooooooooove?
Abu Musab al-Gonzales' Record of Injustice can be found HERE.

Addendum

Why didn't Specter allow Abu Gonzales, the U.S. Torture Czar to be sworn in for today's hearing? Also, why can't the rest of the committee watch videos of Bush and Gonzales misleading Congress and the public about their domestic spying program? Why do the Republicans always sound like these types of hearings are nothing but a waste of time? How do they manage to wipe the shit off of their faces (without getting caught on camera) after "questioning" the Attorney General? And finally...why is Abu Mousab al-Gonzales so fuckin' shiny? AND....is this too much of a stretch? Chuck Grassley v. Mick Jagger??!
Yeah...it's too much. Sorry about that. No. Resemblance. Whatsoever.

Please, oh please call Ashcroft to testify...

...and when I say "testify," I mean: to express or declare a strong belief, especially to make a declaration of faith. That being said, I hope he douses his seat with the oil of a thousand baby seals before he takes the oath. Abu Gonzales sounds especially condescending this morning. I hope the rest of the Republicans on this committee have Specter-sized balls. Unfortunately, I foresee a smarmy, grinning Cornyn to lob softballs at the shiny, pockmarked Gonzales. Le sigh... He really does bring shame to the decent brown folk (like Bill Richardson and myself) out there.
Oh how I wish these two still looked this hot. It would make all of their illegalities seem bearable. Keep the teeny-tiny C-SPAN feed on your desktop this morning. Dance Bush-monkey, DANCE!

Gag me with the Constitution

I lost $30.oo on the State of the Union last night. I totally should have bet over on the standing ovation count. I forgot how much stand-up/sit-down bullshit really goes on. Ah well...I have another $30.00 riding on some college basketball game tonight. I forget which teams, but the pot stands at over 1K for the winner. There wasn't really anything inspiring or revolutionary about this year's speech. He did say we were "addicted to oil," but that phrase was floating around the internet hours before he stepped up to the podium. The internet has succeeded in removing any element of surprise from huge speeches like the SOTU. Unfortunately, so has this President. Chirsty Harvey & crew hosted a post-SOTU wrap-up with: John from Americablog, ReddHedd from Firedoglake, Bill from Liberal Oasis and Sean from the Agonist. You can listen to it HERE, courtesy of Think Progress. It's a nice finish to Sam Seder's program from last night. In other news :
